About How good is the Rosetta Stone program for Russian

I took 2 years of Russian in high school , but that was a long time ago. Recentley I rented some books and CD’s in Russian and I was suprised how quickly it started coming back to me. I have enrolled in a college class for Russian to start next semester. I want to study and learn as much ads I can in the meantime. All the Rosetta Stone reviews are excellent. I have tried the free demo. I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and how effective it was. I seem to be able to pick up Languages very quickly and I want to become fluent in Russian. I have been looking at all my options for about 2 weeks and other than phrase books there doesn’t seem to be much you can do besides living in that country. I have excellent pronunciation and a very good base from my Russian high school class. I would really appreciate any info on Rosetta Stone and the Russian course inparticular. I would describe my Russian level as just a little above a beginner. Thanks.

About Whats the best way to learn Russian

I am currently going to school at a community college to specifically learn Russian. It seems to be going alright but the idea of spending thousands of dollars on a education I feel I can get in a matter of months by going to Russia and speaking it seems silly to me. What are some options I have? Are there jobs I can get in Russia without a degree? I can teach English, but all of the places I have looked at want a BA to work. Any ideas?

About Arabic or Russian in College

I’m starting college this fall and I’m having trouble choosing which language I should choose, Russian or Arabic. I am doing the army’s ROTC program and hope to have a career with the United states military/government in the future.

Currently government agencies have both Russian and Arabic as critical languages. I have always been interested in Russian culture/history, but I feel like the need for Arabic speakers will always be there in the government and I don’t think the Russian language has that security I’m looking for.

Pros for Russian
-More interested in Russia than the middle east (not that I don’t like middle eastern politics, I just feel more passionate about Russia)
-Still listed as a critical language for the US government
-Not a whole lot of people study it anymore in the US
Cons for Russian
-Despite Russia’s possible economic growth, the Russian population is decreasing
-No longer studied as much in Eastern Europe
-Only official language in 4 countries (as opposed to Arabics 26)
-Not sure how long the government is still going to have a need for Russian speakers
Pros for Arabic
-VERY critical to US security at the moment and in the future
-I like the security knowing that If I take the time to learn Arabic I can almost certainly find a job within National security
-More arabs are being able to understand each other with technology becoming more popular in the region
Cons for Arabic
-Middle eastern history/culture is OK in my opinion, just not super passionate about it.
-Modern standard Arabic is only written, and spoken orally during formal interviews or news shows, its not used in everyday conversations.
-Arabic Dialects are VERY different from each other. So after learning MSA (which I couldn’t really use to communicate) I would have to take the time to learn a dialect to be understood in that region of the middle east.

If anyone could provide me some sound advice on this matter I would really appreciate it. Thank you:)
I understand arabic is more useful, and I like that. But I am also white so I feel like If I had to do some work in a country I would fit much better in Russia/Eastern Europe than the middle east.

About College – Screenwriting, creative writing, poetry, Russian – Best College choice

Okay, so looking for colleges online is difficult. Looking for colleges anywhere is difficult. And I have some specifics I want in a college that are very important and thought people here might have a better insight on where to go, seeing as whenever I type it into google it doesn’t include all of my requirements, usually just the first few words that I include. It is very important for me to go to a college that has Russian as a language and I am able to study abroad, that is a must. But I also would like their writing programs to be very good, I want to take a screenwriting course as well as creative writing and something for poetry. I haven’t been very successful in finding a college that has all of these, although I’m sure there are. Can someone help me out and give me a list of a few colleges that include all of these fields? Thank you.
